About the role

Senior Staff Engineer role focused on cross-org technical leadership, building durable systems and patterns, and shaping engineering culture at Whatnot. Remote-friendly with hub offices; requires extensive cross-org impact at consumer scale.

Responsibilities

  • Drive cross-org technical impact by creating capabilities that don't yet exist, measured by movement in company-level metrics and durability of systems.
  • Establish technical direction across org boundaries through strategy docs, RFCs, and architecture reviews to enable autonomous team decision-making.
  • Spot systemic risks and opportunities by maintaining deep context across domains and staying close to the business.
  • Build patterns and frameworks that become engineering defaults and enable faster, high-quality delivery.
  • Steward the health of multiple systems and guide their evolution balancing short-term pragmatism with long-term architectural integrity.
  • Shape engineering culture and grow the team through mentorship, collaboration, external speaking, and program/process improvements.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including cross-org technical leadership at consumer scale.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience.
