About the role

Remote-based data scientist role at The Athletic focusing on building ML models to understand users, optimize workflows, and improve product recommendations. Collaborates with data, product, growth, and engineering teams to productionize data science pipelines and guide experiments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and implement mathematical models to drive key long-term product goals, like predicting which free users will subscribe or recommending articles to users at the right time.
  • Lead projects with hands-on analysis and modeling, selecting appropriate methods and complexity.
  • Use quantitative analysis to understand user signals and develop data-driven recommendations.
  • Design and develop data science pipelines in production.
  • Guide complex experiments.
  • Cultivate an outstanding data science environment.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of experience as a data scientist or data analyst with proven ability to apply scientific methods to solve real-world problems on web-scale data.
  • Strong working knowledge of Python to train ML models and deploy them to production.
  • Solid understanding of SQL with ability to pull/write to data warehouses.
  • Understanding of subscription media and recommendation engines with ability to translate into insights and optimizations.
  • Knowledge of statistical principles and their application to predictive modeling.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to build cross-functional relationships.
  • Ability to explain sophisticated concepts to diverse audiences and craft data-driven stories.
