About the role

The Athletic’s Leon H. Carter newsroom internship is a 12-week program (remote or NYC-based) for Summer 2027. Interns will rotate between editing and reporting on the Daily Desk, gain exposure to multiple sports verticals, and connect with editors and reporters across the newsroom.

Responsibilities

  • Attend daily meetings with Daily Desk editors.
  • Edit stories filed by different sports verticals, asking questions of reporters and vertical editors as necessary.
  • During the reporting portion of the internship, generate story ideas off the news.
  • Work writing shifts focused on breaking news and react quickly when news happens, both as a reporter and an editor.
  • Night and weekend work expected.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate students who are ideally in their junior or senior year. All undergraduates and post graduates are encouraged to apply however.
  • Ability to work a 30 to 40 hour work week.
  • Previous newsroom internship experience is a plus.
  • Flexibility: ability to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly.
  • Deep knowledge of and a passion for sports.
  • Remote internship with travel to New York City; NYC-based candidates may work on-site in the New York office.
