About the role

Versatile visual journalist to report, design and create graphics and multimedia stories with a focus on breaking news and fast-turn coverage. Produces maps, charts, diagrams, interactive graphics, and may include video, photography, and animation. Works with newsroom journalists and Graphics colleagues; may require weekend work. In-office role based in New York City with four days per week in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, report, design, and publish breaking news graphics and multimedia stories using a variety of visual forms.
  • Design and build interactive and static visualizations.
  • Collaborate with Graphics staff and journalists from other newsroom desks on major breaking news events.
  • Conceptualize new lines of reporting and analyze data to discover visual stories with accuracy, clarity, and impact.
  • Share responsibility for regular weekend news graphics coverage, ensuring prompt, high-quality visual response to breaking news.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience producing, reporting, or editing visual journalism or news graphics.
  • Proven track record of identifying visual opportunities quickly and delivering effective graphics in a fast-paced breaking news environment.
  • Expertise in visual software (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma) and front-end web development tools (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Demonstrated experience with data reporting, interface design, and information graphics design.
