About the role

Senior Engineering Manager to own one team end to end (data engineering or product/web application) at Obviant. Lead technical direction, culture of quality, and team growth in a fast-paced, early-stage environment serving defense acquisition data and AI tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction with senior engineers and guide design tradeoffs, architecture decisions, and implementation quality
  • Own engineering standards and quality bar; decide what "good" means and ensure it sticks
  • Mentor and raise the bar for the whole team; foster a culture where quality is the default
  • Step in tactically to unblock the team and deliver business-critical outcomes
  • Develop engineers with growth plans, direct feedback, and clear leveling conversations
  • Hire and expand the team while maintaining high standards under pressure
  • Manage up and down; keep leadership informed and align team direction with company goals
  • Co-create and improve team rituals; improve estimation and predictability
  • Run retros to close loop improvements and ship lasting changes
  • Maintain meaningful health and delivery metrics and guard against gaming them
  • Partner with Product, Design, and go-to-market teams (or analysts/AI/data teams for data engineering) to align product goals with engineering outcomes
  • Translate mission and business goals into clear engineering outcomes and communicate impact to stakeholders
  • Push back with clarity while remaining open to changing your mind
  • Keep the team focused and healthy amidst shifting priorities

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of engineering experience, including substantial time leading and growing engineering teams
  • Strong technical depth with ability to reason through system design and identify failure modes
  • Track record of owning delivery for a team: planning, estimation, execution, performance, scalability, and technical debt
  • Experience giving hard feedback and handling underperformers; successful exits when needed
  • Strong communication across leadership, engineers, and non-technical audiences; proactive and proactive communication
  • Ability to operate with high autonomy and accountability in a fast-moving, early-stage environment with ambiguity
