About the role

Senior Engineering Manager to own one team end to end (data engineering or product/web application) at Obviant, setting technical bar, delivering with high quality, and growing the team in a fast-paced defense-tech environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction with senior engineers, guide design tradeoffs, architecture decisions, and implementation quality
  • Own the engineering standards and quality bar and ensure it sticks without bottlenecking
  • Mentor and raise the bar of the whole team, fostering a culture where quality is the default
  • Drop into tactical roles when needed to unblock the team or land business-critical outcomes
  • Develop engineers with growth plans and clear leveling conversations
  • Provide candor and empathy in feedback, and handle underperformance and exits with dignity
  • Hire and expand the team while maintaining high hiring standards
  • Manage up and communicate team direction and risks to leadership and peers
  • Balance culture and process, improve estimation and predictability, and avoid theater in rituals
  • Run retros to close loop improvements and ship/implement changes
  • Manage meaningful health and delivery metrics and avoid gaming metrics
  • Partner with Product, Design, GtM (or Analysts/AI/ML/Data) to align engineering output with customer needs
  • Translate mission and business goals into clear engineering outcomes
  • Push back with conviction when needed, and stay focused when priorities shift

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of engineering experience, including substantial time leading and growing engineering teams
  • Strong technical depth with ability to reason through system design and identify failure modes
  • Track record of owning delivery for a team: planning, estimation, execution, performance, scalability, and technical debt
  • Experience giving hard feedback and managing underperformers or exits
  • Strong communication skills across leadership, engineers, and non-technical audiences
  • Comfort with high autonomy and accountability in a fast-moving, early-stage environment
