About the role

Senior Infrastructure Engineer focused on the traffic path between Whatnot customers and code. Own edge, DNS, private connectivity, service mesh, TLS, and internal access. Hands-on software role building controllers, extensions, and automation to instrument and improve observability, reliability, and security of network paths.

Responsibilities

  • Shape how traffic reaches Whatnot at the edge, including caching, security posture, and routing decisions across regions
  • Build and scale private connectivity between services, accounts, and clusters with strong security
  • Push service proxy and mesh layer enhancements, tuning for real traffic patterns and extending configurations
  • Automate name resolution, TLS, and internal access to be boring for engineers
  • Instrument every layer of a request so network issues are evidenced quickly
  • Design tooling for safe failure changes and rehearse failover before incidents
  • Collaborate with Reliability, Platform Engineering, and Security to improve observability and network security

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, preferably running network behind high-traffic applications
  • 3+ years hands-on experience with Istio and Envoy (extensions and tuning)
  • Experience writing custom Envoy extensions
  • Deep Kubernetes networking knowledge (CNI, pod/service networking, ingress, intra-cluster traffic)
  • Experience operating a CDN at scale (preferably Cloudflare)
  • Experience running globally distributed applications and latency-sensitive systems
  • Strong fundamentals in DNS, TLS, TCP, routing; curiosity about lower layers
  • Deep knowledge of modern cloud networking, especially AWS (VPC topology, Transit Gateway, PrivateLink, peering, NAT)
  • Ability to debug across boundaries with packet captures, proxy logs, and traces
