About the role

Photo Editor role focused on conceptualizing, assigning and publishing visual journalism (still and video) for The New York Times’ Business report across platforms, with a hybrid NYC arrangement and a strong emphasis on multimedia storytelling, editorial judgment and collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive of, pitch, develop, edit, pace and build powerful and innovative visual stories with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Maintain the highest standard of photography and multimedia assigning for feature, news and enterprise stories for all platforms including mobile, print and social
  • Identify, vet and onboard new contributing photojournalists; ensure ethical journalistic rigor, independence and integrity; build relationships with photographers through briefings, feedback
  • Collaborate with writers, reporters, editors, visual editors and photographers to shape ideas into visual story opportunities
  • Demonstrate strong editorial judgment; work with Times editors and legal for vetting, copyright, legal and ethical questions
  • Focus on diverse subjects and photographers to serve a global, multigenerational audience
  • Coordinate with Business desk editors and security to ensure preparation and safety of photojournalists
  • Maintain and meet desk photo budget; process/approve invoices promptly
  • Attend photo department meetings to report visual priorities
  • Support journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth
  • Report to a Deputy Editor of Photography

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in a newsroom or equivalent
  • Experience assigning and directing photojournalists in varied situations
  • Proven deep research skills
  • Expertise in handling electronic images, photographic usage and copyright issues
  • Strong technical skills; proficiency in digital tools and programs including CMS, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools and social media platforms
