About the role

Digital design fellowship in the Opinion section in New York, supporting editorial and creative teams to produce and promote digital Opinion journalism, with opportunities to work on visuals, motion graphics, and art direction in collaboration with editors, illustrators, and photographers.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize and create visual experiences across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and emerging platforms
  • Translate editorial ideas into compelling motion, video, audio and digital design interactives
  • Experiment with visual storytelling, formats and design approaches to engage new audiences
  • Contribute to creative ideation, visual development and art direction
  • Pitch ideas and collaborate with editors, illustrators, and photographers
  • Develop work within established design systems while exploring opportunities to evolve them
  • Document and archive creative work and processes to support the broader team
  • Participate in training and social programs designed for the fellowship
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Qualifications

  • No more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience, excluding internships
  • Self-directed, adaptable designer who can quickly develop creative solutions
  • Strong understanding of social media branding, platforms and best practices
  • Portfolio demonstrating visual storytelling and design craft
  • Proficiency in After Effects, Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to work within and extend established brand systems
