About the role

Principal Engineer role focusing on planning, allocation, efficiency, attribution, and data tooling for Anthropic's capacity and compute infrastructure. Build production data pipelines, observability, and scheduling systems to maximize utilization across multi-cloud environments, serving research, finance, and leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Build the planning and allocation stack — tools to allocate capacity, planning, and the scheduler enforcement across regions/providers.
  • Drive the efficiency programs: stranding and rightsizing, unused capacity recovery, and job-level utilization across training, inference, and eval; establish per-config baselines.
  • Own attribution and forecasting — reconcile billing across providers, attribute spend to workloads, and translate demand signals into a defensible compute plan.
  • Build the data platform ingesting occupancy, utilization, and cost into BigQuery with SLAs for completeness and latency; enable new providers as net-new integrations.
  • Operate Kubernetes-native systems at scale — collection agents, workload labeling, taint/reservation/scheduling behavior.
  • Treat the output as a product: gather requirements, define schema contracts, design for consumers including on-call and SLOs.

Qualifications

  • Strong track record building and operating production systems (devops flavor).
  • Python and SQL at production quality (Python for pipelines, BigQuery SQL for the presentation layer).
  • Deep experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and its operations.
  • Experience with observability/tools: Prometheus, PromQL, Grafana; writing recording rules and dashboards.
