About the role

Engineering leadership role responsible for building and scaling Render's usage-based billing systems, from usage capture through invoicing and financial reporting, and partnering with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience to align roadmap with business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the Billing engineering team, owning usage capture, data pipelines, third-party billing platforms (Orb, Metronome, Stripe, or similar), and invoicing
  • Own the roadmap for Render’s billing systems, from usage metering through invoicing, reconciliation, and financial reporting
  • Drive billing correctness and reliability: implement monitoring, reconciliation, and testing to catch errors before customers do
  • Partner with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience to align the roadmap with pricing, reporting, and customer needs
  • Hire and develop engineers to support planned team growth, while maintaining clear focus as billing scope expands
  • Make key architectural decisions balancing long-term platform investment with near-term pricing launches and fixes
  • Build a strong performance management and career development practice for a team that includes senior ICs

Qualifications

  • Strong people leadership — the top priority for this role
  • Hands-on enough to review code, prototype, and contribute directly when it helps the team
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity with adaptability and a growth mindset
  • Proven experience building and scaling teams, ideally growing a group from a handful of engineers into a larger org
  • Experience managing engineers; including senior and staff engineers; hiring, and performance management
  • Hands-on experience with usage-based billing, payments, or other revenue-critical systems, including third-party platforms like Orb, Metronome, or Stripe
  • Ability to partner closely with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience without needing to fill those functions yourself
  • Strong business instincts, with the ability to connect engineering investment to billing accuracy, revenue, and customer trust
  • Background from either a startup or a larger company; able to operate in a fast-paced environment
