About the role

Kovo is seeking its sole legal and compliance hire to own end-to-end legal and compliance for the business today and for future products. The role focuses on building a minimal, scalable posture for a multi-product fintech company, working closely with product and engineering to design compliance considerations from zero to one, and driving automation and outside counsel usage as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Stand up new products from zero to one with the smallest footprint that works and reuse existing licenses/obligations where possible
  • Define the entity, licensing, and bank-partner posture for each product once the design is settled
  • Write policies, procedures, disclosures, and agreements each product needs, and get them approved by partners and regulators
  • Review marketing, product flows, and partnerships before they ship, and build scalable review processes
  • Reconcile the posture across the product suite as it grows, removing duplication
  • Keep current legal/compliance operations running to the standard expected by partners
  • Identify opportunities to codify, automate, or retire processes and implement
  • Run litigation defense, dispute resolution, complaints, exams, and audits with limited cross-functional support
  • Manage bank and partner compliance relationships, privacy, and BSA/AML/KYC and fraud policy
  • Build and maintain agentic workflows for research, drafting, policy maintenance, monitoring, and reconciliation to reduce ongoing involvement
  • Maintain high quality standards for all agent-produced outputs and engage outside counsel only when necessary
  • Communicate clear, fast, written answers to founders, engineering, product, marketing, and customer experience
  • Represent Kovo with banks, partners, regulators, and auditors

Qualifications

  • JD and active bar admission in a US state
  • Prior legal or compliance role at a fintech startup (ideally fast-growing)
  • Mid-career with experience taking a regulated consumer product through its lifecycle
  • Multidisciplinary background with experience in business, engineering, or product roles alongside legal work
  • Hands-on experience with consumer finance stack: FCRA/credit reporting, UDAAP, TILA/Reg Z, ECOA, EFTA/Reg E, state lending/money-transmission licensing, bank partnerships, BSA/AML/KYC
  • Proven ability to minimize license needs, consolidate programs, or automate processes
  • Experience managing outside counsel and regulator/bank relationships
  • Clear ability to design, implement, and maintain scalable compliance postures
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Ability to operate in a high-intensity, ownership-focused environment
