What the data says

  • AI infrastructure is the volume engine. It holds 2353 open roles, 51% of the panel, and the two biggest adders (OpenAI +269, Applied Intuition +261) are infrastructure companies.
  • Vertical agents grow the fastest. Open roles rose 170% from January to August 2026, versus 60% for AI infrastructure, with Harvey driving 86% of the group's gain and Basis and Crosby scaling the same playbook.
  • Horizontal agents are the counterpoint. The group grew just 16%, and the cohort's deepest cuts, Glean (-69) and Gamma, are both horizontal-agent companies.
  • The stage pyramid sets the volume race. Giga-stage companies average 404 open roles; early-stage companies average 15, a 27x gap, and no vertical-agent company is in the giga tier.
