About the role

Backend-focused software engineer role at Shepherd, a technology-driven MGU transforming commercial Property & Casualty insurance. Role involves ownership across the stack, driving technical decisions, mentoring engineers, and contributing to product strategy in a fast-growing insurance tech environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead major initiatives and own large areas of Shepherd's product experience across verticals
  • Work across the stack and collaborate with underwriting, design, and product management
  • Mentor other engineers and help scale the team
  • Balance innovation with pragmatic delivery and ship quality products
  • Contribute to product strategy and architectural decisions, not just implementation
  • Collaborate closely with PM, CTO, and insurance team (underwriters, actuaries, etc.)

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience
  • Some experience with insurance – prior InsurTech or actuarial role is a plus
  • Experience with Javascript/Typescript (backend and/or frontend)
  • 5+ years of working experience (preferably as a full-stack engineer) with a track record of delivering high-impact products
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity and ownership mindset
  • Excellent communication of technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders
