About the role

Epoch AI is seeking researchers and senior researchers to improve society's understanding of AI capabilities and their trajectories. Fully remote organization with global hiring; role involves examining driving forces behind AI, tracking AI progress, and forecasting impact across multiple teams.

Responsibilities

  • Data Center Team: produce data insights and reports about frontier AI data centers and improve methodology behind the AI Data Centers explorer; may manage contractors analyzing individual data centers.
  • Supply Chain Team: investigate the supply chain for compute and other AI inputs, mapping components and owners, and analyzing trajectories and payments; produce data explorers, data insights, and reports.
  • Polling & Experiments Team: design and analyze polls, RCTs, and other behavioral data on AI usage; investigate AI impacts, uplift, and strategic landscape of AI.
  • Special Projects Team (Insights Researchers): run exploratory investigations into new questions for Epoch, publish results as reports or newsletter posts; potential to develop into lasting products.
  • Gradient Updates Team (Insights Researchers): analyze big-picture questions about AI progress and societal impacts; write findings for Epoch's newsletter to inform discourse and decision-making.
  • Benchmarking Team: create, run, and analyze benchmarks measuring AI capabilities across economic importance and dynamics like recursive self-improvement.
  • Benchmarking Reviews Team: review and certify benchmarks; may expand to benchmark development and writing guides.
  • ECI and Capability Trends Team: maintain and extend the Epoch Capabilities Index and related projects; run experiments on AI models and analyze trend breaks.

Qualifications

  • Strong curiosity and rapid learning across diverse domains.
  • Rigorous reasoning under uncertainty with quantitative estimation.
  • Familiarity with AI trends.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior experience in AI-related research areas or in parts of the AI development pipeline (hardware, datacenters, benchmarks, etc.) preferred but not required.
  • Open to applicants from diverse backgrounds; remote-friendly.
