About the role
Leader of X’s central Applied AI team, responsible for discovering, inventing, solving, and prototyping AI solutions across multiple projects, bridging high-impact research with practical, scalable implementations.
Responsibilities
- Attract and develop a diverse team of ML/AI experts and coach them on research aspects; foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
- Partner on technical vision and strategy for early stage/investigation projects; co-design and co-lead technical roadmap.
- Develop, implement, and deploy robust, scalable ML/AI solutions for real-world problems across multiple X projects and scientific domains, focusing on foundation models and transformer architectures.
- Design and build hybrid AI models, potentially integrating LLMs with graph-based ML and reinforcement learning.
- Provide research and engineering leadership on early explorations: define problem scope, identify optimal AI/ML approaches, evaluate merits.
- Guide data strategy and contribute to ML pipeline development and system evaluation.
- Contribute to code reviews, establish ML engineering best practices, optimize code for performance and scalability.
- Mentor team members; act as liaison to broader research community and Alphabet groups; stay abreast of advancements.
Qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related technical field.
- Experience leading a team of research scientists and mentoring junior researchers or engineers.
- Experience applying ML/AI techniques to complex problems.
- Strong, hands-on experience with LLMs/Transformers, including fine-tuning, RLHF, prompting, agent development.
- Experience deploying backend LLM applications.
- Proficiency in Python and deep experience with ML/Deep Learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX, HuggingFace, LangChain).
