About the role

Engineer to evolve EBS placement systems, optimizing how storage volumes are distributed across AWS infrastructure. Work on distributed systems for real-time placement decisions balancing performance, availability, durability, and cost, with opportunities to impact EBS customers at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and writing code to update placement decision engine for launching new storage features, utilizing new server capabilities, and revising optimization functions
  • Diving into data to inform design decisions or measure effectiveness of changes
  • Reasoning about infrastructure variability, workload patterns, and interaction of multiple optimization objectives in placement decisions
  • Debugging complex distributed systems issues requiring careful analysis and creative problem-solving
  • Reviewing proposals and code from peers and partner teams
  • Consulting with partner teams on rollout planning, capacity planning, and fast mitigation of customer impact via workload movement in placement systems
  • Collaborating with principal engineers and scientists to make data-backed high-judgement decisions
  • Partnering with 5+ teams across the organization to understand operations of a large storage business

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language
