About the role

Senior IC role to own reliability, performance, and scalability of Scribe's data tier. Lead design, migrations, and guardrails for databases; drive automation, monitoring, and AI-assisted review to support a rapidly growing data stack (PostgreSQL/Aurora Serverless V2, OpenSearch, Redis, SQS, RabbitMQ, CDC pipeline to Snowflake).

Responsibilities

  • Review migrations for safety at scale — locks, backfills, concurrent index builds, NOT VALID constraints
  • Catch N+1 patterns and missing select_related/prefetch_related in review
  • Apply and extend conventions for QuerySet usage and physical schema design (indexes, constraints, partitioning)
  • Help scale review through automation — contribute to AGENTS.md files and DNA scaffolding; tune AI review bots to flag risky migrations and ORM anti-patterns
  • Capacity planning workstreams as traffic and engineering throughput grow
  • Zero-downtime schema migrations and cutovers
  • Multi-AZ resilience within a single region — Aurora writer/reader placement, failover behavior and RTO/RPO, ElastiCache and OpenSearch AZ topology, RabbitMQ survivability across AZs
  • Backups, PITR, failover testing, retention
  • Operate and extend the CDC pipeline (Aurora → DMS → S3 Parquet → Snowflake) with DMS task tuning and schema evolution
  • Build tooling and guardrails — Migration review automation, CI checks, slow query pipelines, self-service dashboards
  • Support and evolve the rest of the stack — OpenSearch, Redis caching, SQS/RabbitMQ topology and reliability
  • Mentor and share knowledge — onboarding docs, tech talks, incident response, blameless postmortems for data tier

Qualifications

  • Strong PostgreSQL — EXPLAIN, MVCC, bloat, lock contention, vacuum/autovacuum; Aurora Serverless V2 experience preferred
  • ORM fluency (Django, SQLAlchemy, ActiveRecord, or similar); predict SQL, spot N+1, control eager loading, projections, aggregations
  • Single-region multi-AZ design understanding
  • Production CDC experience, ideally AWS DMS; comfortable with logical replication, slot hygiene, schema evolution, Parquet data lakes
  • Hands-on with pganalyze (or Datadog DBM / Performance Insights / pg_stat_statements) and CloudWatch metrics/alarms
  • Experience using AI coding and review tools in team setting; maintaining AGENTS.md, configuring review agents, iterating on prompts
  • Production message brokers experience (SQS, RabbitMQ, Kafka); delivery semantics, idempotency, failure modes
  • Automation and IaC background — real code (Python, Go, Terraform)
  • Cross-team collaboration; design docs that hold up; comfortable in high-growth environment
