About the role

Founding Engineer. Build v1 → v10 and join the early core team to scale Skalar with AI-driven tax & accounting solutions. Own the backend, ship features end-to-end, influence the stack, and lay the foundations for scale. Grow into leadership as the company expands across countries. Above-market pay + meaningful equity.

Responsibilities

  • Build 0→1 and beyond with the founders: Ship major features and product lines end-to-end (spec → ship → measure).
  • Core Architecture: Design and implement the APIs, data models and services that the product runs on — and ship the UI on top of them. Pragmatic architecture choices with high autonomy.
  • Iterate fast: Ship v1 fast, iterate weekly with real user feedback.
  • Leadership: Hire and mentor junior engineers (if interested); gain leadership experience as we grow.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience building and operating web applications end-to-end, with strong TypeScript/Node fundamentals (Next.js, FastAPI, or comparable server frameworks; React on the frontend)
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field
  • Experience in a cross-functional team setup, product-minded and agile startup environment
  • Backend-focused with ability to own a feature through to the UI (balanced full-stack profiles welcome)
  • Experience deploying applications using containerization and orchestration tools (such as Docker)
  • Integrated AI deeply into daily coding tasks (not just for autocompletion)
  • Very good written and verbal English (min. C1); German a plus
  • Valid work permit to work in Germany
