About the role

Senior Backend Engineer role focused on Identity for Affirm's international markets outside North America. Hands-on coding in Kotlin and Python, owning quarterly goals, improving code quality and system reliability, and mentoring others. Remote-first with Spain-based requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Owning and delivering quarterly goals for the team; guiding engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems
  • Collaborating with product management, design & analytics to ideate and articulate technical constraints; weighing risks and trade-offs
  • Proactively identifying and solving project, process, technology, or business issues
  • Supporting operations and availability of team artifacts; creating and monitoring metrics; on-call duties
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership via code review and design standards; advocating for them beyond the team
  • Developing talent on the team; providing feedback and guidance; leading by example
  • On-Call Rotation - There would be an on-call rotation for this role as a requirement.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes
  • Experience defining a technical plan for delivering significant features or system components with elegant, simple, extensible design
  • Proficiency in making significant changes in a large code base and developing tools/practices to do so safely
  • Ownership mindset and proactive seek feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for global collaboration with engineering teams.
