About the role

Staff backend engineer to lead technical strategy, collaboration across product teams, and operational excellence for Affirm’s audit-grade ledger platform.

Responsibilities

  • Setting technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and aligning with critical, business-impacting projects
  • Collaborating across product management, design & analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks and trade-offs are well understood
  • Acting as a force-multiplier by defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes
  • Owning the team’s operations and availability with monitoring, triage, playbooks, policies, testing and alerting for on-call readiness
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership through code review and design standards, and advocating for them beyond the team
  • Developing talent on the team by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin
  • Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes
  • Experience in financial systems, ledgering, treasury or adjacent domains where data accuracy and system reliability are critical
  • Experience delivering major features or system components with a technical and execution plan; high-quality, understandable code
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to move from low-level language idioms to large-system architecture understanding
  • Growth and impact trajectory demonstrated by gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team
  • Equivalent practical experience or Bachelor’s degree in a related field
