About the role

Senior Backend Engineer role at Affirm focused on Repayment Scheduling. Remote from Spain. You will own and deliver quarterly team goals, design scalable backend systems, collaborate across product, design, and analytics, and participate in on-call rotations. The team builds and operates systems that automate payments at scale (~$40B/year) for over 20 million users.

Responsibilities

  • Owning and delivering quarterly goals for the team and guiding engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems
  • Collaborating with product management, design, and analytics to ideate and articulate technical constraints and trade-offs
  • Proactively identifying and solving project, process, technology, or business issues
  • Supporting operations and availability of team artifacts by creating/monitoring metrics and participating in on-call efforts
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership by setting/improving code review and design standards
  • Developing talent by providing feedback and guidance, leading by example
  • On-Call Rotation – there would be an on-call rotation for this role as a requirement

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes
  • Experience defining a technical plan for delivering a significant feature or system component with elegant, simple, extensible design
  • Proficiency in making significant changes in a large code base and developing tools/practices to do so safely
  • Ownership mindset with proactive seeking of feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team
