About the role

Senior backend engineer focused on designing and building a next-generation reliability platform for Affirm’s production systems, with AI-assisted development to improve health monitoring, debugging, and reliability across services.

Responsibilities

  • Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team, lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems, and ensure supportive delivery.
  • Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics throughout the product lifecycle; ideate, articulate technical constraints, and make decisions considering risks and trade-offs.
  • Identify and advocate for project, process, technology, or business issues and lead efforts to solve them.
  • Support operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating as needed, and contributing to on-call activities.
  • Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting/improving code review and design standards, and sharing these practices beyond the team via writing and talks.
  • Develop talent on the team by providing feedback and guidance, leading by example.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience as a software engineer.
  • Experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience shipping web apps with declarative UI frameworks like React or Vue.
  • Practical use of LLMs or AI frameworks to enhance automation and guidance with guardrails and citations.
  • Ability to define a technical plan for the delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple, extensible design.
  • Proficiency in making significant changes in a large codebase along with a suite of tools/practices for safe changes.
  • Demonstrated ownership of growth and seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
