About the role

Machine Learning Engineer II focused on building real-time underwriting ML systems to assess repayment risk and expected value at checkout. Collaborates across Engineering, Risk Analytics, Product, and ML Platform to take models from idea to production with monitoring and retraining workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and iterate on underwriting prediction models for tabular and sequential data
  • Build and scale feature pipelines and training datasets from proprietary and third-party signals
  • Prototype new modeling ideas, run offline experiments, and push best-performing approaches into production with risk controls
  • Productionize models by integrating into batch and/or real-time decision systems, enhancing reliability, latency, and robustness
  • Instrument and monitor model and data health, define retraining/backtesting workflows
  • Collaborate across Engineering, Risk Analytics, Product, and ML Platform to define requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience as a machine learning engineer or a PhD in a relevant field
  • Strong Python skills and production-quality code
  • Experience building and evaluating classification models (gradient-boosted trees like LightGBM/XGBoost/CatBoost or similar)
  • Experience with a deep learning framework (PyTorch preferred)
  • Experience with distributed data processing or parallel compute frameworks (Spark preferred; Ray/Dask or similar)
  • Experience with ML lifecycle tooling for training orchestration, experimentation, and model monitoring (e.g., Kubeflow, Airflow, MLflow, or equivalents)
  • Proficiency with AI-powered developer tools to accelerate iteration and code quality
  • Ability to translate simple business scenarios into multi-component solutions with clear, well-tested, extensible code
  • Comfort navigating large code bases, reviewing others' code, and providing feedback through code reviews
  • Ownership mindset for growth and seeking feedback from team and stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
