About the role

Senior backend engineer role focused on Batch Infrastructure at Affirm, delivering scalable, reliable compute platforms for batch workloads and on-demand/scheduled compute solutions in the cloud with a strong emphasis on availability, ownership, and collaboration across product, design, and analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Owning and delivering quarterly goals for the team; leading engineers and supporting delivery.
  • Collaborating with product management, design & analytics throughout the product development lifecycle; articulating technical constraints and trade-offs.
  • Proactively identifying issues and leading efforts to solve them.
  • Supporting operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call efforts.
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, and sharing through writing and tech talks.
  • Developing team talent by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
  • Experience building and managing Workflow Orchestration frameworks like Airflow, Flyte, Prefect, Temporal, Luigi, etc.
  • Experience with or working knowledge of efficiently scaling frameworks like Spark/Flink for extremely large scale datasets on Kubernetes.
  • Experience defining a technical plan for significant feature/system delivery with elegant, simple, extensible design; high-quality coding.
  • Ability to make significant changes in a large codebase and build tools/practices to do so safely.
  • Demonstrated ownership of growth and seeking feedback from team/mangaer/stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
