About the role

Senior Backend Engineer focused on Batch Infrastructure at Affirm, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable compute platforms and batch processing capabilities used by ML, Product, and Financial Engineering teams. Remote role in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Owning and delivering quarterly goals for the team and guiding engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems.
  • Collaborating with product management, design & analytics across the product lifecycle to ideate, articulate constraints, and trade-offs.
  • Proactively identifying and solving project, process, technology, or business issues.
  • Supporting operations and availability of team artifacts through metrics, escalation, and on-call support.
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, and sharing through writing and tech talks.
  • Developing talent on the team by providing feedback and leadership by example.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
  • Experience building and managing Workflow Orchestration frameworks (Airflow, Flyte, Prefect, Temporal, Luigi, etc.).
  • Experience with or knowledge of efficiently scaling frameworks like Spark/Flink on Kubernetes for extremely large scale datasets.
  • Ability to define a technical plan for delivering significant features or system components with elegant, simple, extensible design.
  • Proficiency in making significant changes in large code bases and developing tooling to enable safe changes.
  • Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for global collaboration.
  • Equivalent practical experience or Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
