About the role

Senior IC engineer responsible for technical direction and ownership of Affirm Bank's infrastructure, data platform, and integration with Affirm Inc, operating with bank-level compliance and audit readiness in a small, AI-native team.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction across the bank's systems. Own medium-to-long-term technical strategy for core surfaces (cloud infrastructure, data platform, core banking configuration, CI/CD, networking, and Bank ↔ Affirm Inc integration) and make architecture calls for the team.
  • Own the hardest problems end-to-end. Design, build, integrate, and operate high-stakes components and own incident response.
  • Be the force multiplier on a small team. Set patterns, standards, code/design/documentation expectations, and mentor engineers.
  • Ship AI-first, leveraging AI tools and agentic workflows as a load-bearing capability for code, design review, runbook generation, and operations.
  • Lead vendor selection and ownership. Evaluate, integrate, and oversee third-party platforms; manage critical vendor relationships end-to-end.
  • Define the integration boundary with Affirm Inc. Set data flows and patterns to ensure seamless product operation while preserving regulatory separation.
  • Build for examiners. Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Audit to ensure product constructs are audit-ready.
  • Own the operational posture of the bank's systems. Establish reliability, observability, alerting, runbooks, incident-response, and disaster-recovery practices.
  • Influence across the organization. Communicate strategy and tradeoffs to executives, board, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and other engineers.
  • Help grow the team and the bar. Mentor, participate in hiring, and model high standards.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with staff-level, hands-on credentials and a track record of owning ambiguous, high-stakes systems end-to-end through launch and operations.
  • Comfortable owning ambiguity at large scale; able to balance speed with sound engineering judgment.
  • Hungry to leverage AI to drive outcomes; fluent with AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows.
  • Bias toward simplicity; experience building lean engineering culture with a default-deny posture and standalone-operability.
  • Track record of setting technical direction and executing multi-quarter architecture strategy across teams.
  • Deep systems thinking across AWS cloud, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and cloud data platforms (Snowflake or comparable).
  • Regulated-environment experience (banking, payments, securities, healthcare, etc.) with examiner-facing documentation.
  • Experience selecting, integrating, and operating meaningful third-party platforms post-launch.
  • Comfortable as the technical face to non-engineering stakeholders; able to document decisions for auditability.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
