About the role

Staff Software Engineer on the Order Platform team responsible for post-checkout systems (orders, captures, refunds, settlement) and technical strategy to enable reliable, scalable transactions for merchants and consumers within Affirm’s post-checkout APIs.

Responsibilities

  • Setting technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and aligning it with critical, business-impacting projects
  • Collaborating across product management, design & analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks and trade-offs are understood and managed
  • Acting as a force-multiplier through the definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes
  • Owning team operations and availability with proper monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing and alerting to support on-call efforts
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards and advocating for them beyond the team
  • Developing talent on the team by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin
  • Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes
  • Analytical and discerning in designing services with clear API boundaries, reliability, and thoughtful handling of consistency, idempotency, and failure modes in financially-sensitive domains (payments, commerce, ledger)
  • Experience delivering major features or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution planning, and writing high-quality, reusable code
  • Comfort with ambiguity, ability to navigate from low-level idioms to large-system architecture
  • Growth mindset with ability to gather and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for global collaboration
  • Equivalent practical experience or Bachelor’s degree in a related field
