About the role

Senior Product Designer responsible for end-to-end design of core workflow surfaces (issues, cycles, views) and owning decisions across both Plane Cloud and self-hosted deployments, collaborating with engineers, PMs, and researchers across San Francisco and Hyderabad.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design of core workflow surfaces (issues, cycles, views) end to end — from problem framing through high-fidelity spec, with the judgment calls in between being yours to make.
  • Decide where Plane's design system bends and where it holds. Build new patterns when the system lacks an answer, and push back on one-off requests that would fragment it.
  • Run usability tests and read friction points as design problems, then reprioritize your roadmap based on findings.
  • Design for two audiences: Plane's cloud product users and self-hosted infrastructure users with variable screen sizes.
  • Work daily with engineers and PMs across San Francisco and Hyderabad, with Figma files scrutinized in public issue threads by users you may never meet.
  • Defend design decisions in writing to engineers who may have scoped simpler versions, without relying on formal research studies.

Qualifications

  • You've shipped end-to-end product design work — able to walk through a project from ambiguous problem to shipped interface.
  • You design dense, data-heavy interfaces (task lists, tables, kanban boards, etc.).
  • You're fluent in Figma and can produce developer-ready specs.
  • You've worked inside or built a design system, understanding the tradeoff between consistency and bespoke screen-level design.
  • You write and present clearly enough that rationale survives scrutiny from engineers who disagree.
