About the role

Lead the end-to-end development of Quadrants, an open-source Python-to-kernel compiler for physics simulation, covering API design, IR and lowering, optimization passes, and backends while aligning with Genesis workloads.

Responsibilities

  • Own Quadrants end to end: the API, the IR and lowering, the optimization passes, the numerical primitives, and the roadmap.
  • Build and maintain an API surface idiomatic for Python users; provide clear errors and robust escape hatches.
  • Develop and evolve the IR, lowering, and backends with room for differentiable simulation.
  • Implement optimization strategies to turn naive code into efficient execution plans (vectorization, memory usage, synchronization, threading, etc.).
  • Develop and own core primitives (e.g., Cholesky, eigendecomposition, matmul, reductions, solver kernels) with benchmarks and regression tracking.
  • Watch Genesis and the compiler together to identify performance wins and reduce duplication.
  • Treat the project as a product: benchmark workloads, track performance, anticipate friction, and drive adoption.
  • Collaborate with users and other engineers; communicate openly and design in the open for external users.

Qualifications

  • - GPU optimization and architecture knowledge (registers, shared memory, barriers, atomics, threading)
  • - Strong understanding of Python and API design; preference for idiomatic Python
  • - Experience with compilers (IR, lowering, optimization) and performance-oriented development
  • - Interest in differentiable simulation and multiple backends
  • - Ability to work proactively, self-directed, and grow into leading a small team
  • - Experience with testing and benchmarking as part of development
