About the role

Senior Engineering Manager to own one team end to end (data engineering or product/web application) at Obviant, leading technical direction, people growth, team operations & delivery, and product/business alignment in a fast-moving, autonomous environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction with senior engineers, guide design tradeoffs, architecture decisions, and implementation quality
  • Own the engineering standards and the quality bar, defining what 'good' means and ensuring it sticks
  • Mentor and raise the bar for the whole team, promoting a culture where quality is default
  • Drop into tactical work when necessary to unblock the team and land business-critical outcomes
  • Develop engineers with real growth plans, direct feedback on cadence, and clear leveling conversations
  • Deliver hard feedback candidly and empathetically, face to face
  • Make hard calls on underperformance and manage exits with dignity
  • Hire and expand the team while maintaining high bar under pressure
  • Manage up and down, keeping leadership informed and aligned on direction and risks
  • Promote culture-driven team operations, improving estimation and predictability
  • Run productive retros and close the loop on improvements
  • Manage meaningful health and delivery metrics without gaming them
  • Partner with Product, Design, and GtM when leading product engineering or analysts/AI/ML/data consumers when leading data engineering
  • Translate mission and business goals into engineering outcomes and be able to explain impact to stakeholders
  • Push back with conviction while remaining open to change
  • Keep the team focused and healthy amid shifting priorities

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of engineering experience, including substantial time leading and growing engineering teams
  • Strong technical depth to reason through system design, identify failure modes, and prioritize shipping
  • Track record of owning delivery for a team: planning, estimation, execution, performance, scalability, and technical debt
  • Experience giving hard management feedback, handling underperformance, and executing exits
  • Strong communication across all directions (leadership, non-technical audiences, coaching engineers)
  • Comfort with high autonomy and accountability in a fast-moving, early-stage environment
  • Strong references from current and prior roles
