About the role

Lead Product Designer for AI for the Planet at Ai2 (Allen Institute for AI), Seattle, WA. Own the design for Skylight and OlmoEarth products, shaping data-heavy, AI-enabled platforms with a team of designers. Role emphasizes end-to-end product design, research-driven process, and building design systems to support for-good environmental and climate initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design for Skylight and OlmoEarth products.
  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, engineers, and researchers to ship impactful software for data-heavy, AI-enabled platforms.
  • Develop design foundations including systems, patterns, and components to accelerate the team.
  • Conduct user research, frame problems, explore options, drive decisions, ship to external users, and iteratively refine based on usage.
  • Design for complex, data-intensive interfaces (tables, charts, dashboards, filtering, querying, monitoring).
  • Work with modern AI tooling to prototype and iterate (agentic workflows, prototypes, PRs).
  • Contribute to cross-team critique, shared systems, and design critique across Ai2 to influence multiple products.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional product design experience focusing on web applications and software products.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Exceptional design fundamentals across usability, user research, interaction design, information architecture, visual design, and design systems.
  • Experience designing data-intensive applications (dense tables, charts, dashboards, filtering and query interfaces, monitoring/alerting).
  • End-to-end product experience from framing problems to shipping and post-launch refinement.
  • Experience using modern AI tooling to prototype and rethink design processes (e.g., Claude Code, agentic workflows).
  • Ability to build design foundations for the team (systems, patterns, components, tooling).
  • Ability to learn new domains quickly, including ML concepts (training runs, evaluation metrics) and making them legible to non-experts.
  • Portfolio demonstrating at least one software interface design project.
