About the role

Senior backend engineer focusing on authentication experiences, building high-availability, low-latency backend orchestration layers for web and mobile surfaces at Affirm. Remote Canada role with emphasis on owning quarterly goals, collaboration with cross-functional partners, and maintaining system reliability and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems, and ensuring team support during delivery.
  • Collaborate with product management, design & analytics in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions with risks and trade-offs.
  • Proactively identify project, process, technology or business issues, advocate for them, and lead in solving them.
  • Support operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting keep the lights on/on-call efforts.
  • Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, and advocating for them beyond the team through writing and tech talks.
  • Help develop talent on the team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
  • Experience working close to the web and mobile layers, with understanding of frontend design patterns such as fraud prevention and backend-for-frontend.
  • Experience defining a technical plan for delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple and extensible design.
  • Ability to write high quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
  • Proven ability to make significant changes in a large code base and develop tools/practices to do so safely.
  • Demonstrated ownership of growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
