About the role

Lead role owning Quadrants end-to-end: API, IR and lowering, optimization passes, numerical primitives, and the product roadmap, with a focus on building the best open-source Python compiler for physics simulation and performance-critical numerical computing.

Responsibilities

  • - API & authoring experience. Build an idiomatic Python-facing surface for an open-source library with clean decorators, legible constraints, sharp errors, and real escape hatches.
  • - IR, lowering & backends. Maintain a stable IR that lowers to multiple backends, with room to grow and potential for differentiable simulation.
  • - Optimization. Turn naive code into strong execution plans (vectorization, register/shared memory usage, barriers and atomics, cooperative threading, dead-buffer and redundant-traffic elimination, reduced synchronization).
  • - Primitives. Develop and maintain kernels for Cholesky, eigendecomposition, matmul, reductions, solvers, with correctness, benchmarks, and regression tracking.
  • - Watching Genesis and the compiler together. Hunt performance wins on Genesis and Quadrants, propose API changes to reduce duplication and special-casing.
  • - The project as a product. Benchmark workloads, track performance over time, monitor regressions, drive adoption, and stay close to users (Genesis first).

Qualifications

  • - GPU understanding of optimal patterns (access, registers, shared memory, barriers, atomics, threading). CPU intuition a plus.
  • - Python & API design sense. Idiomatic Python that feels natural to users; APIs that free rather than constrain.
  • - Experience with compilers (IR, lowering, optimization) and balancing maintainability with performance.
  • - Proactive, largely self-directed work style; comfortable engaging with users and designing in the open; potential to lead a small team.
