About the role

Staff Design Engineer responsible for owning Stylus, Scribe's design system, and ensuring design and frontend engineering quality across web app, desktop app, browser extension, and marketing site. Combines design craft with frontend platform work, including AI-ready design language exploration and internal tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Own Stylus. The roadmap, triage, and the call on what goes in, measured against metrics like component adoption, accessibility coverage, and documentation health, plus the design system survey conducted every 6–12 months.
  • Build the hard components that balance aesthetics and performance, deciding what becomes a shared primitive vs. a one-off, and building both.
  • Prototype in code and validate with customers using React and TypeScript for animations, keyboard, and touch; test with real users.
  • Work with designers without a handoff; iterate in Figma or code and assess the build cost of interactions.
  • Keep design and code from drifting apart; align tokens with design, migrate legacy components onto the system, and maintain useful Figma-to-code tooling.
  • Make the system work for agents as well as people by exploring AI-ready UX patterns and building primitives for model-assembled UI.
  • Share workflows and documentation (Cursor and Claude Code) with designers and engineers; mentor engineers on design principles.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in front-end development with strong design sensibility; deep knowledge of CSS, the DOM, and browser rendering.
  • Design ability to make call on interactions and assess cost-benefit.
  • Experience building a design system at depth (components, primitives, tokens, versioning, adoption, governance).
  • Ability to shape work and own a roadmap; not just take tickets.
  • Experience building with AI tools (Cursor, Claude Code) and promoting their use.
  • Accessibility, keyboard and touch input, and respecting user preferences by default.
