Forward Deployed Engineer, India
Hybrid (Hyderabad, India)Full-timePosted 1mo ago
About the role
Notion is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer focused on migrations to join the India team. This role delivers complex, production-grade data migrations, integrations, and automations for customers across APAC. The position is hybrid in Hyderabad and involves building migration infrastructure, tooling, and regional engineering capability from the ground up, with potential growth into leadership or broader engineering paths.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical execution layer after customer requirements, scope, and solution architecture have been established with the regional FDE.
- Apply a repeatable migration lifecycle from source inventory to handoff, including pilot, testing, cutover, reconciliation, and hypercare.
- Translate approved requirements into technical designs, implementation plans, test strategies, and runbooks.
- Build production-quality migration utilities, backend services, data pipelines, integrations, and automations using Python, SQL, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure.
- Investigate source-system behavior, data quality issues, permissions, rate limits, authentication constraints, and edge cases; propose practical solutions.
- Design and validate permissions and inheritance mappings; manage ambiguities and obtain required approvals.
- Design migrations for reliability, scale, security, observability, idempotency, failure recovery, and safe reruns.
- Execute migrations following least-privilege access and customer security/data-residency requirements; avoid storing customer data in unmanaged systems.
- Build validation and reconciliation frameworks to prove migration completeness and accuracy.
- Debug failures across code, data, and external systems; drive resolution.
- Manage multiple workstreams and communicate scope, risks, and trade-offs clearly.
- Surface scope changes early; document assumptions and trade-offs with recommended options.
- Maintain auditable records of scope, decisions, risks, and validation evidence.
Qualifications
- 3 to 6 years in backend/data/integration engineering or related roles.
- Strong hands-on Python development experience.
- Experience with Node.js, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Strong SQL skills and relational data modeling/transformations.
- Experience with REST APIs, JSON, authentication, webhooks, and system integrations.
- Experience owning a production migration or similar technical implementation end-to-end.
- Experience taking a technical problem from requirements to production operation.
- Experience with Git, code review, automated testing, and production deployment.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills across code, data, infrastructure, and external systems.
- Clear written and verbal English communication; ability to explain technical decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- High ownership and ability to operate with incomplete information.
