About the role

Motivated Senior Applied Scientist to join the Modeling and Optimization (MOP) Routing Science team at Amazon. Focus on developing and improving last-mile experience through algorithmic and analytical work, with strong emphasis on combinatorial optimization, routing, and data-driven optimization for global fulfillment operations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and improve state-of-the-art solutions to large-scale optimization problems, particularly vehicle routing and related problems.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate optimization models and tools in collaboration with software development engineers.
  • Contribute to network planning, modeling, and analysis to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness of global fulfillment operations.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce variable costs by optimizing transportation network topology, inventory placement, transportation operations and scheduling, and fulfillment center processes.
  • Help plan the location and deployment of fixed assets to improve capital investment efficiency.
  • Create metrics to quantify improvements to fulfillment costs resulting from optimization models and tools.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications
  • PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or Master's degree and 10+ years of industry or academic research experience
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java or Perl
