About the role

Engineer to design, build, and maintain a high-performance distributed storage system for Modal's serverless platform, focusing on petabyte-scale object storage, caching, and data replication across cloud stores, CDN, and datacenters.

Responsibilities

  • Designing the caching, preloading, and peer-to-peer layers to hide object-store latency and keep public ingress off saturated uplinks
  • Owning durability and cost at petabyte scale, including streaming and batch replication between origins and garbage collection over billions of objects
  • Working across the stack from local disk and page cache to distributed blob storage and garbage collection
  • Shaping storage technology for next-generation infrastructure to bring storage closer to workloads

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience writing high-quality production code
  • Experience building high-performance distributed storage or caching systems at a large scale
  • Strong cloud skills, including deep familiarity with object storage (S3 or similar), CDNs, and their consistency, throughput, and cost characteristics
  • Strong knowledge of low-level operating system foundations (Linux kernel, file systems, page cache, containers, etc.)
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and respond to production incidents
