About the role

Staff Software Engineer for Affirm’s Identity team, focusing on identity decisioning and KYC across multiple regulatory environments, supporting international expansion and responsible for backend system design, reliability, and collaboration across product, design, and analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Setting technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and aligning it with critical, business-impacting projects
  • Collaborating across product management, design & analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks and trade-offs are well understood and managed
  • Acting as a force-multiplier through defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes
  • Owning the team’s operations and availability with monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing and alerting to support keep the lights on and on-call efforts
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards and promoting them beyond the team
  • Helping develop talent on the team by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
  • Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes
  • Experience delivering major features or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution planning; capable of writing high-quality, understandable code
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments and understanding system architecture from low-level idioms to large-scale design
  • Proven ability to gather and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers to drive impact
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
