About the role

Research-focused backend engineer role at Exa, contributing to parsing, content understanding, credibility, and large-scale supervision for web-scale search and knowledge extraction.

Responsibilities

  • Parse pages into content vs. furniture, classify page type and topic, determine usability, extract publication date, assess quality and trust, and identify new information not present in existing pages.
  • Work on classic document understanding tasks as well as open-ended problems like credibility, misinformation, and pages written for search optimization.
  • Build and improve parsing, page quality judging, credibility/misinformation modeling, deduplication, large-scale classification and extraction, supervision design for unlabeled problems, and tracing source of bad search results to page-level predictions.

Qualifications

  • Graduate-level ML experience (Master’s or PhD with at least 2 years of relevant experience), or an exceptionally strong undergrad
  • Ability to build a transformer from scratch in PyTorch and train models that are efficient to run everywhere
  • Experience building large-scale datasets with emphasis on supervision over architecture
  • Comfort with problems where ground truth does not yet exist and defining it is part of the job
  • Interest in finding high-quality knowledge and its importance for the world
