About the role
Senior Materials Research Scientist position within SandboxAQ's PFAS team in the ChemSim group. Responsible for bridging generative chemistry discovery with external partners, validating candidate molecules for PFAS-substitution use cases in semiconductor manufacturing, and driving the partner validation loop from problem definition to experimental feedback.
Responsibilities
- Support the partner validation loop by acting as day-to-day scientific contact with external co-development partners to translate problems into target specifications, constraints, and qualification criteria.
- Run SandboxAQ's generative chemistry discovery workflow for PFAS-substitution use cases; assess chemical plausibility and use-case fit; rank candidates to produce decision-ready shortlists for experimental validation.
- Bring domain judgment to the pipeline by ensuring outputs are directionally and qualitatively appropriate for the target semiconductor application and aligning lead molecules with process, performance, and EHS constraints.
- Close the experimental feedback loop by translating partner validation results into actionable technical improvements for the team and ensuring incorporation through design cycles.
- Align targets across internal teams by collaborating with dataset, computational chemistry, ML, and generative-modeling teams to keep objectives aligned with partner qualification criteria.
Qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- 3+ years of post-PhD experience (or equivalent) in industrial or applied R&D developing, formulating, or qualifying high-purity performance materials and formulations to replace an incumbent in an existing process without losing critical properties.
- Familiarity with performance and EHS specifications governing qualification of process materials.
- Experience bridging experiment and computation on application-driven projects with external partners, translating between experimental results and modeling outputs.
- Proficiency in Python to run and configure computational discovery workflows and collaborate with generative-ML and physics-based simulation teams.
- Familiarity with generative molecular design, high-throughput virtual screening, or ML property prediction for molecules and materials.
Benefits
- Compensation plus equity and performance-based incentives
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with company match; generous parental leave
- Flexible hybrid work arrangements, generous PTO
- Dedicated learning budgets and opportunities for professional growth
