About the role

Software Development Engineer II on the Amazon Q team, building an intelligent AI assistant that combines generative AI with AWS context, retrieval, tools, and actions to help customers understand their environments and get work done faster. Focused on grounding LLMs in customer AWS data, ensuring security, low latency, and scalable distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build: Design, implement, test, and launch customer-facing Amazon Q capabilities and backend services; connect foundation models with AWS knowledge, customer context, retrieval systems, APIs, tools, and actions.
  • Solve: Work independently on complex engineering problems involving generative AI, distributed systems, contextual grounding, retrieval, tool execution, agentic workflows, latency, reliability, and security.
  • Own: Take ownership of features and services throughout their lifecycle—from requirements and technical design through implementation, deployment, operations, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
  • Design: Contribute to system architecture and technical designs, evaluate engineering trade-offs, participate in design reviews, and build scalable, maintainable, secure, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Operate: Build reliable production systems with testing, observability, monitoring, deployment, operational readiness, and incident response; use signals to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Collaborate and innovate: Work with engineers, applied scientists, product managers, and partner teams to bring advances in foundation models, retrieval, reasoning, and agentic AI into production; participate in code reviews and raise engineering quality.
  • A day in the life: Analyze performance signals, engage in design reviews, write production code, partner with PMs/TPMs/service teams, and run A/B experiments.
  • About the team: Collaborative, fast-moving team behind Amazon Q in AWS Management Console focused on making the assistant genuinely useful on AWS.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience (design patterns, reliability and scaling)
  • 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
  • 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl
  • 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language
