About the role

Senior backend engineer role focused on Lakehouse Infra, providing reliable, scalable offline data access to enable ML, product, and financial engineering across Affirm's data infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Owning and delivering quarterly goals for the team and guiding engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems
  • Collaborating with product management, design & analytics across ideation and decision-making to consider risks and trade-offs
  • Proactively identifying and solving project, process, technology or business issues
  • Supporting operations and availability of team artifacts via metrics, escalation, and on-call efforts
  • Fostering a culture of quality and ownership by setting/improving code reviews and design standards and advocating them beyond the team
  • Developing talent on the team by providing feedback and guidance and leading by example

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
  • Experience scaling technologies such as Iceberg, Flink, Airflow, Spark, Kafka, Snowflake, and Terraform
  • Experience defining a technical plan for delivering a significant feature or system component with elegant, simple and extensible design
  • Proficiency in making significant changes in a large code base with a suite of tools and practices to do so safely
  • Ownership mindset with proactive feedback seeking from team, manager, and stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
