About the role
Senior Nuclear Test Engineer to develop test methods, write procedures, and execute testing supporting reactor development; translate engineering requirements into measurable acceptance criteria and produce traceable evidence of component and system performance, reliability, and readiness. Hands-on role owning testing from method development to reporting, collaborating with design, instrumentation and controls, manufacturing, operations, Quality, and EHS.
Responsibilities
- Develop test methods and write test procedures that map engineering requirements to measurable acceptance criteria. Define prerequisites, boundary conditions, operating envelopes, equipment configurations, instrumentation and calibration needs, and required data.
- Design, procure, assemble, and commission fixtures, test stands, and supporting equipment for mechanical, electrical, thermal, fluid, and integrated-system testing. Build for instrumentation access, serviceability, and repeatable operation.
- Plan and execute performance, endurance, environmental, transient, and failure-mode testing as appropriate to program needs. Support qualification, FAT, SAT, and commissioning in coordination with engineering and Quality teams.
- Specify measurements for temperature, pressure, flow, force, displacement, strain, vibration, electrical response, and other parameters. Integrate sensors, controls, interlocks, and data acquisition with I&C specialists.
- Develop and maintain testing procedures and operating instructions for audit readiness; participate in hazard reviews and establish safe startup/shutdown/abnormal-condition responses.
- Execute testing against controlled procedures, document results and deviations; lead setup verification, shakedown, operation, and post-test inspection; diagnose instrumentation, control-system, or equipment issues.
- Analyze results using experimental methods and measurement uncertainty; prepare technical reports comparing results to acceptance criteria, explain anomalies, and recommend actions.
- Maintain traceable test records, equipment configurations, revisions, and calibration status under nuclear quality requirements.
- Coordinate procurement, fabrication, technicians, vendors, and test facilities to deliver reliable test capability as priorities evolve.
- Improve reusable test methods and equipment to support verification, qualification, and production-testing across hardware programs.
Qualifications
- Education in an engineering discipline (nuclear, mechanical, electrical, chemical, or related).
- At least five years of hands-on engineering experience, including direct testing with nuclear components or systems in nuclear power, reactor development, nuclear research, or nuclear supply chain.
- Practical experience developing and executing tests for physical hardware, components, or integrated systems; understanding how operating conditions and interfaces affect results.
- Working knowledge of nuclear QA and design-control practices, including controlled procedures, configuration management, traceable records, and documentation of test deviations.
- Experience authoring and executing formal test protocols and preparing technical reports within a controlled documentation process (traceability, revision control, deviation documentation).
- Experience turning incomplete requirements into repeatable test methods and interpretations; background in design of experiments, root-cause analysis, uncertainty, or reliability-focused testing.
- Hands-on ability to assemble, integrate, and troubleshoot test fixtures, instrumentation, and equipment from engineering drawings and CAD.
- Ability to assess measurement quality, interpret instrument data, compare results to criteria, and investigate unexpected behavior under real conditions.
- Ability to identify and mitigate test hazards (electrical, mechanical, thermal, pressure) using established procedures.
- Clear technical writing and collaboration skills; ownership through procurement delays, test failures, and changing priorities.
