About the role
Staff Software Engineer responsible for setting the technical direction for AI-powered developer tools and a self-service AI developer tools platform. Focus areas include AI agents, LLM integration, and platform infrastructure to prototype, deploy, and scale Docker's AI developer tooling.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction and own architecture for AI-powered developer tools and the self-service platform within the team's roadmap
- Turn ambiguous problems into clear requirements, plans, and staged decisions; document assumptions
- Establish patterns, standards, and best practices for LLM integration, agent development, and production AI systems
- Shape platform capabilities including deployment frameworks (ArgoCD/GitOps), observability integration (Grafana), security controls, and operational tooling
- Design reliable, scalable infrastructure for hosting AI agents and developer tools
- Recommend AI technology choices, LLM provider strategies, and agent orchestration approaches with explicit trade-offs
- Work with Senior Manager and Principal engineers to align technical decisions with business goals
- Design, build, and operate production AI agents for developer productivity (code review, test generation, deployment diagnostics, on-call automation)
- Build self-service platform capabilities to reduce time-to-production for new AI tools
- Build systems to speed adoption of AI-native development tools (Claude Code, Codex)
- Set reliability, security, performance standards for AI systems (SLOs, monitoring, incident response, cost management)
- Design integrations between AI tools and existing infra (CI/CD, observability, deployment systems)
- Participate in on-call rotation to improve tooling and alerting
- Evaluate emerging AI/LLM technologies and determine adoption vs build decisions
- Define metrics for AI tool effectiveness (adoption, productivity, satisfaction)
- Lead cross-team delivery, surface risks early, collaborate with Infra, Security, Data on standards
- Mentor engineers on AI/LLM integration, agent development, platform practices
- Lead design reviews and raise quality of design and code reviews
- Create reusable patterns, ADRs, and documentation for broader reuse
- Help turn AI-assisted engineering practices into shared workflows and controls
- Possibly participate in on-call rotation as needed
Qualifications
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated technical leadership on production systems at scale
- Hands-on production experience building LLM-powered applications, AI agents, or AI-assisted developer tools
- Strong understanding of LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, and others), prompt engineering, agent orchestration frameworks, and practical AI in software development workflows
- Track record of designing and building scalable distributed systems and developer-facing platforms
- Production experience with cloud-native infrastructure (Kubernetes, GitOps, observability, CI/CD)
- Proficiency in Go (preferred), Rust, Java, or Python with strong fundamentals
- Experience designing developer tools, platform systems, or internal tools used by other teams
- Ability to clarify requirements and constraints with stakeholders before designing
- Track record of leading complex initiatives across teams and influencing without authority
