About the role
Advanced Materials Engineer role bridging EU and NA materials science efforts to develop and harmonize sustainable paper packaging materials and automation-compatible systems within Amazon’s Global Materials Science organization, based in the EU (Luxembourg).
Responsibilities
- Lead laboratory research and development of packaging materials including paper substrates, adhesives, tapes, coatings, and alternative fiber technologies, with deep understanding of pulp and paper manufacturing processes and converting operations.
- Design and execute experiments to optimize material formulations and processing parameters, applying the materials science triangle framework (processing-structure-properties) across the full range of packaging materials and converting processes.
- Develop next-generation materials solutions that improve performance, cost, sustainability, and automation compatibility focusing on EU supplier capabilities and regional material availability.
- Advance materials innovations from concept, pilot, and deployment phases, ensuring compatibility with EU packaging automation hardware and converting equipment.
- Evaluate and develop tape, adhesive, and coating systems for automated packaging lines considering substrate interactions, machine speed, and environmental conditions.
- Serve as the primary conduit between EU and NA materials science teams, driving global alignment on materials specifications.
- Build and maintain understanding of EU supplier base and how it differs from North American supply landscape.
- Identify region-specific materials requirements dictated by EU regulations and supply constraints; balance global standardization with regional customization.
- Collaborate with EU automation hardware teams to ensure materials are co-developed with automation equipment and optimize machine runnability and throughput.
- Provide materials expertise during automation system design, commissioning, and optimization; translate materials properties into equipment parameters.
- Characterize materials using a range of techniques (tensile, rheometry, DSC/TGA, FTIR, SEM, etc.) and ensure compliance with standards (ASTM, TAPPI, ISO, ISTA).
- Define materials specifications and develop QC protocols; harmonize specifications where feasible across NA and EU.
- Direct collaboration with EU-based paper mills, adhesive manufacturers, tape producers, converters to develop and scale new materials.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians; present findings at reviews; contribute to IP through disclosures and patent applications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in materials science engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, pulp/paper engineering or related technical discipline
