About the role

Amazon ECS is a fully managed container orchestration service. This SDM leads a team of software engineers responsible for core ECS components, owning large-scale distributed systems, and setting technical direction to ensure high availability, security, and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, hire, and develop a team of 6–12 software engineers. Set a high bar, give clear feedback, and build an inclusive team that delivers.
  • Own the design, delivery, and operation of ECS control plane or data plane components (e.g., scheduling, orchestration, agent and runtime, service discovery and networking integration, deployments) depending on team charter.
  • Drive operational excellence. Own availability, latency, and security targets and the on-call health of the team. Lead COE reviews and ensure fixes ship.
  • Work backwards from customers. Write and review PRFAQs and design docs, prioritize with product management, and deliver on commitments.
  • Plan and manage delivery across multiple quarters. Balance new features, tech debt, scale, and operational work.
  • Raise engineering standards: testing, deployment safety, observability, and use of AI-assisted development to speed up the team.
  • Collaborate with dependent teams and service owners. Resolve cross-team technical and prioritization conflicts.
  • Engage directly with customers and field teams to understand needs and escalations.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of engineering experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
