About the role

Lead and build a backend engineering team, develop high-scale microservices and APIs, mentor team members, and improve Joy's complex backend systems while partnering closely with product and CX teams.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a team of engineers.
  • Implement features of all sizes in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Build high-scale microservices APIs supporting user experiences.
  • Mentor team members to improve their coding and system design skills.
  • Ensure the backend systems are correct, maintainable, and high-performing.
  • Hire, develop, and retain engineering talent.
  • Improve Joy API and backend architecture for scalability and security.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical knowledge.
  • 6+ years of experience, especially with 3+ years in engineering team leadership.
  • Proven track record of hiring, developing, and retaining engineering talent.
  • High familiarity with Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript.
  • Experience in building secure, high-performing REST or GraphQL APIs.
  • Strong understanding of SQL and NoSQL systems (Firebase, PostgreSQL).
  • Excellent debugging skills for complex applications.
  • Previous startup experience preferred.
