About the role

Databricks is hiring a Staff Software Engineer - Backend in London, UK. Join as one of the founding engineers to help build Lakebase product and establish the London presence, contributing to the Lakebase platform, its reliability, and the data/AI infrastructure stack.

Responsibilities

  • Lakebase Platform Reliability: cross-functional infrastructure, observability, SLI/SLOs definition and measurements, and AI-powered automation for operational efficiency
  • Lakebase Manager (LBM): build and operate the central control plane for Lakebase — database lifecycle management at scale with a focus on reliability
  • Lakebase Proxy: develop the core data path handling client connections and transfer of query traffic across Postgres, HTTP, WebSockets, and Data API; focus on performance, observability, and reliability
  • Work on challenges spanning product to infrastructure: distributed systems, at-scale service architecture and monitoring, workflow orchestration, and developer experience
  • Build reliable, secure, high-performance services and client libraries for large-scale data storage across cloud backends (e.g., AWS S3, GCS, Azure Blob Store)
  • Develop product features enabling customers to store and access data
  • Identify and resolve reliability issues related to Lakebase; drive long-term reliability improvements and define SLIs/SLOs

Qualifications

  • BS degree (or higher) in Computer Science, or a related field
  • 8+ years of production level experience in Java, Scala, C++, or similar language
  • Experience developing large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience working on a SaaS platform or with Service-Oriented Architectures
  • Knowledge of SQL
