About the role

Senior Software Engineer focused on Elasticsearch distributed systems and Serverless offering, tackling deep distributed systems challenges around node communication, data indexing, allocation, and cluster management at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Leveraging distributed systems expertise to build and operate core pieces of the Serverless Elasticsearch offering
  • Improving Elasticsearch components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines
  • Maintaining the cluster coordination system to sustain high performance as nodes join/leave and data moves across the cluster while preserving safety and liveness
  • Pushing the limits on shard/nodes/petabytes capacity
  • Investigating performance and concurrency issues and proposing solutions
  • Supporting support engineers with harder problems
  • Owning operational investigations end-to-end until performance or stability issues are resolved

Qualifications

  • Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms
  • Strong core Java skills and familiarity with standard library data structures and concurrency constructs, plus newer language features
  • Deep technical proficiency in algorithms
  • Experience with complex, highly distributed systems rather than off-the-shelf services
  • Ability to build and debug features with broad multi-machine impact
  • Ability to own projects end-to-end including technical design and collaboration
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debugging, and optimization while owning final outcomes
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and transition between projects/codebases/teams based on priorities
  • Ability to work autonomously, drive decisions, and communicate asynchronously and transparently
